Sussy Cazalet's Terracotta-Toned Cottage

Walls and ceilings in Bespoke Colour
When celebrated artist and designer Sussy Cazalet moved from London to cottage in Norfolk, she turned to us to transform it with rich, earthy bespoke tones. Located on the Houghton Estate, the cottage was a cold, white space, that needed life and warmth. Indeed, Sussy felt compelled to fill her new rented abode with intense colour.

Sussy studied at Leeds and interior architecture at Parsons, later pursuing careers in interior design, theatre design, and classical music, before establishing herself in textiles. This range of experience informed her colour collaboration with us, allowing her to draw on both technical knowledge of colour and an understanding of atmosphere and emotion.
It is this combination of skill that enabled her to create the perfect paint shades with our colour team, transforming her home into a personal, expressive space, an ideal backdrop for her tapestries.

The colour journey began in the kitchen, where Sussy worked with Mylands to create the bespoke hot paprika paint, a vibrant terracotta red that reflects a warm light and contrasts the original dark wood beams of the cottage.
Sussy was inspired to create new tapestries to echo the colour-drenched rooms, influenced by mid-century modernist artists such as Mark Rothko. In the living room, a silk and wool piece titled 'Kyoto Sun' adorns the walls which have been in another custom colour, a gentle sunset pink that pulls the elements of the room together.
Having travelled widely in Japan, Sussy draws deeply on its influence throughout her work and living space. The house has a sense of being lovingly lived in, filled with meaningful objects sourced by Sussy and her family over the years. She looks to the warmth of old English houses as inspiration for a home fille with charm and ease of living, where comfort takes precedence over formality.

The cottage offers a sense of refuge, particularly on Norfolk's darker, colder days. Central to the cottage's design is the lavish use of colour. What started as a blank canvas is now bathed in a palette of rich, earthy Mylands tones, offering a warm backdrop to both Sussy's creative practice and her everyday life.
