Shellac Barrier Seal for Floors

Allow 30 minutes - 1 hour before application of the first coat of water-based flooring lacquer.

Application: 

The surface to be finished must be clean, dry and free from any contamination, it is very important to remove all traces of wax or polish from the floor by washing thoroughly with White Spirit (when using White Spirit ensure the area has good ventilation).

The surface to be finished must be clean, dry and free from any contamination, it is very important to remove all traces of wax or polish from the floor by washing thoroughly with White Spirit (when using White Spirit ensure the area has good ventilation).

Pre-sand the timber with 100 or 120 grit paper and remove sanding dust prior to lacquer application or if there are gaps that need to be filled, save it and mix it with Joint Filler 298550005 and apply. For easy sanding and to minimise grain-raising apply a coat of

Mylands Shellac Barrier Seal first. If applying a stain first, the floor will need to be sanded more finely than 120 grit, the stain then needs adequate drying time before Shellac Barrier Seal is applied – refer to the individual stain data sheets listed below for drying times.

Once the surface is clean and dry, (White Spirit is a slow evaporating solvent so will need several hours to dry - particularly in joints between floorboards) 1 coat of Shellac Barrier Seal can be applied, leave for 30 minutes to 1 hour before applying the first coat of Mylac or Mylac Extra. 

Refer to the Data Sheet for the above lacquers for application of further coats of lacquer. The following stains may be used under Shellac Barrier Seal: Nitrostain, Earth Stain, Non Fade Stain,

Water Stain and Light Fast Stain (in the case of Light Fast Stain, as it is also solvent based, the barrier seal may move the stain a little).

Please note that Barrier seal must be used in the case of Nitrostain if you are planning to overcoat it with Mylac as Mylac is waterbased and the bitumen content of the Nitrostain will not allow adequate drying or curing.

Thinning

May be thinned with Methylated Spirits, (09 802 0741) if required. (Up to 40%)

Coverage 

On average per litre 10-12 m2 dependant on type and porosity of the timber.

Cleaning 

Clean equipment with Methylated Spirits (09 802 0741).
