Our Tips to Achieve the Perfect Finish

When it comes to applying Mylands metallic paints, there are a few tips to keep in mind to achieve the best results. The first step is to stir the paint well for at least five minutes using a stirring stick. Avoid using a screwdriver or similar object to stir the paint as it does not mix the gold or silver particles with the resin properly. It's also important to test the paint on a separate surface before starting the job to ensure that the colour is correct according to the product specification.

Before painting it is recommended to apply a Mylands undercoat. For gold shades use a cream or pale yellow undercoat, while a light grey undercoat should be used before painting with silver. This helps to ensure a smooth and flawless application and to bring out the best in the metallic paint.

When applying the paint, it's essential to work fast and not to stop once the procedure has begun. This helps to maintain a consistent wet edge and ensure that the paint is applied evenly. It's also important to maintain the same direction during application with the roller or brush to avoid patchy or uneven results.

If you're working on a large surface such as a wall or ceiling, it's a good idea to use masking tape to protect edges for cutting in. Use a small roller to do the edges, then use a larger roller to complete the work. If you use a brush to cut in, then complete the work with a roller, you might experience a problem that we call “picture framing”, where the edges look different from the middle of the surface. This can be avoided by using a small roller to the edges and then using a larger roller to complete the work.

Maintain the same direction during application with the roller and/or brush. If the product is rolled in different directions, the amount of gold/silver deposits can appear patchy. When possible, use the same tool across the entire surface to complete the work. If you start the surface using a brush, complete the entire surface using the same brush.

One of the most significant challenges when using metallic paints is getting an even and consistent finish. As a result, it's important to avoid overlapping when applying the paint. Overlapping can result in a patchy appearance that looks unprofessional. You should also be mindful of the brush or roller's texture, as this can impact the final result. Short, dense rollers are ideal for a smooth finish, while thicker, fluffy rollers may result in a bumpy or textured finish.

Finally, after you have finished applying the metallic paint, you may need to apply an overcoat to protect the paint and preserve its luster. Mylands QD Kitchen & Bathroom Varnish, available in matt, satin, or gloss finishes, is an excellent option for this purpose. This overcoat will add an extra layer of protection and durability to the metallic paint, making it ideal for use in high-traffic areas or anywhere that it may be handled frequently.
